How It Works
The Grace Hopper Program web development curriculum is divided into 3 phases.
Timeline (Weeks)
Weeks
The live online, instructor-facilitated Full-Time Foundations phase is designed for beginners and intermediate-level coders looking to rapidly ramp up their skills in a bootcamp environment. For 6 weeks, you’ll study full-time (Monday-Friday) with other coders to prepare for the core curriculum of our Web Development Immersive.
Full-Time Foundations Web Development Curriculum
- HTML and CSS
- Introduction to JavaScript programming
- Advanced JavaScript including closure, prototypical inheritance, and recursion
- Web development environment and industry-standard tools
Full-Time Foundations Features
- Foundational coding concepts to support all skill levels
- Student-centered, inquiry-based learning in teams
- Instructor-facilitated, live online classroom format
- Immersive digital learning tools
- Hands-on, collaborative, and team-building projects
Core Curriculum: Junior Phase
Throughout this rigorous second phase, you’ll be studying full-time to master technical skills and professional coding communication.
Junior Phase Web Development Curriculum
Front-end development. User expectations of Web and Mobile Applications have significantly increased in the last 10 years, and the sophistication of front-end development has increased to match it. You will study HTML5 and advanced CSS, and go beyond with modern technologies like React.
Back-end development. You’ll take your JavaScript skills to the back-end with Node.js and the amazing ecosystem of libraries that have made JavaScript the industry standard of back-end web engineering. We’ll teach you to use APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to connect to vast amounts of data to power your web applications.
Databases. You will then master data organization and storage by working with popular SQL relational databases like Postgres, and learn how to integrate them into your applications.
Junior Phase Features
Pair Programming. Working with a fellow student, you’ll each use your newfound knowledge to write and optimize front-end and back-end code. This helps you build real-world experience and prepare for industry standard, technical coding interviews.
Interview Prep. You’ll learn the basics of standard interviewing Q&A and start to integrate these best practices into pair programming communications.
Core Curriculum: Senior Phase
At this point, you’ll have a solid understanding of the technologies taught in the immersive program. The Senior phase is your time to put that knowledge to use by building fully functional web applications from scratch. You will continue to study full-time during this phase–deepening your knowledge by solving real-world problems and applying best practices to your work.
Senior Phase Web Development Curriculum
- Guided team project. You’ll join a group of 3-4 students to collectively create a functional e-commerce site–building all the components of a web application including the front-end, back-end, and database.
- Personal project. After formulating your own idea for a web or mobile application, you’ll start to build it from scratch. You will take design considerations into account, like user experience and information architecture in addition to full stack development. You will learn new technologies or libraries in order to complete this project, which will help you learn how to learn advanced coding concepts throughout your career.
- Capstone project. You will work with a team of students to come up with an ambitious idea for an app, and build it out over 2 weeks. This will be the most impressive project in your portfolio and will demonstrate your full understanding of software development and industry best practices.
Senior Phase Features
- Career Coaching. Fullstack Academy’s Career Coaches are your one-stop professional development resource. They’ll work with you on core aspects of the job search–from technical interview preparation to resume optimization–throughout the Senior phase of your coding journey and beyond.
- Hopper Talks. You’ll also have access to specialized career success content during this phase. These “Hopper Talks” are open discussions around gender inequality in tech, with particular emphasis on navigating company culture, combating imposter syndrome, and negotiating salary.
What We Look For in Grace Hopper Program Students
The Web Development Immersive at the Grace Hopper Program is designed to be both challenging and rewarding. Our curriculum provides all the tools you need to succeed, including an immersive live online environment, expert instructional material, optimized learning tools, and engaging activities.
It’s our remarkable student experiences and outcomes that truly set us apart, though. For these, we rely on the commitment of the entire Grace Hopper Program community–its current students, staff, and alums. That’s why we only admit prospective students who we feel meet or exceed these qualifications.
Commitment
The bootcamp starts at a foundational level to accommodate both beginner and intermediate coders, but moves into more advanced concepts every week. To ensure comprehension, you’ll need to maintain a near-perfect attendance record.
Drive
Coding bootcamps are built for accelerated learning to launch your career sooner. That means topics will be covered quickly, and you may need to set aside additional time for study, mentorship, or skills practice to stay on track.
Transparency
You’ll have support every step of the way, but it is up to you to communicate your specific needs. Be sure to master regular, honest correspondence across all channels to collaborate effectively with others.
Allyship
More than teamwork alone, allyship requires respect, empathy, and understanding. Students should be aligned with our mission - to transform lives and communities with technologies that power the future - and committed to equity and diversity in tech.
